Effects of Propolis on Oral Mucositis

Efficacy and safety of propolis mouthwash in management of radiotherapy induced oral mucositis; A randomized, double blind clinical trial

Research published in the journal of Reports of Practical Oncology and Radiotherapy in 2020 evaluated the efficacy and safety of propolis mouthwash in oral mucositis and dysphagia in patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy based on a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The patients were randomly divided into two groups (15 patients), using either 15 mL propolis containing mouthwash three times daily for four weeks or the placebo mouthwash. After the second week, significant differences were observed with propolis mouthwash. The frequency of grade 3 of OM in the third and fourth week was 0% in the propolis group, while no profound adverse effects were related to propolis placebo during the study. The scientists proposed that propolis mouthwash is an effective and safe medication for mitigating oral mucositis and dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing) in patients under the head and neck radiotherapy.* *Dastan, Farzaneh, et al.
